It’s been a while since I’d seen Joi (and even longer since I worked for him), but had a chance to see Joi Ito speak at an MIT event in early February, where Joi is the Director of the MIT Media Lab, along with being a prominent venture capitalist.
BI = Before Internet Era
AI = After Internet Era
Innovation in BI was MBA driven, typically incremental. AI Innovation is engineer driven. (and Joi showed a picture of the old PSINet bathroom data center : link to joi.ito.com).
“I was probably one of the first people in Tokyo to have a 128K leased line to their toilet.” According to Joi’s blog.
AI Innovation is usually done with cheap, off the shelf components and tends not to be capital intensive.
AI vs. BI Question:
While the printing presses of the NY Times are legally listed as “Assets” on their balance sheet, are they “assets” or “anchors”, which slow or prevent innovation?
All in all, it was good to see him speak again, and chat briefly about some old friends.
