Ed Rogers, who heads Rogers Investment Advisors (RIA), describes himself and his team as providing a “boutique, Asian-focused asset management business”. To that end, he supplies investors around the world, from individuals to pension funds and private banks, with on-the-ground advice, as well as developing financial products that provide investment opportunities in Asia. These last include funds composed of hedge funds, private equity offerings, or other vehicles, addressing different risk appetites and liquidity preferences.
One of the key differentiators between RIA and other advisory services, Rogers claims, is the fact that he can provide “boots on the ground” due diligence in Asia. With offices in Tokyo and Hong Kong, Rogers needs to keep in touch with the teams there or on assignment in other major Asian centers, as well as with his clients around the world. PBXL was an early choice to provide the communications needed by RIA, with a global client base, but an essentially regional footprint.
“It’s vitally important for us that the phones work all day, every day. Our business couldn’t survive if that wasn’t the case. I don’t remember when I first met Jim of PBXL. But I remember choosing PBXL when we first moved into a rental office, and the PBX there was horrible. It was expensive, it was crappy – there was nothing to like. We’re a small business. NTT doesn’t care about me, so what I was looking for was someone who would treat me as an important client, and going by the numbers, I wasn’t important. PBXL did treat me as important, though.”

One particular feature of the PBXL system – the smartphone extensions – is of particular value here. Rogers’ assistant needs constant access to the office telephony system, including voicemail, and the ability to use her cellphone for this is invaluable. In addition, Rogers values the flexible nature of PBXL’s voicemail system. “I can be traveling,” he explains, “and wherever I may be, all my voicemail gets downloaded to my laptop where I can access it and I can just check in.”
Of course, having clients scattered around the world who want to talk can be a serious disadvantage. Rogers calculates that his only “downtime” comes at weekends, following the end of the New York working week. “People call me at 2 o’clock in the morning, because it’s their 2 o’clock in the afternoon, and your phone system has to cope with that. The PBXL system can manage to deal with it,” he says.
What PBXL has done for RIA, he concludes, is “allow us to continue to be a ‘global footprint company’ with people in any one of four or five countries at any one time, and still have all our communications work seamlessly.”
